Alderen

A new map for Alderen

Alderen’s map used to be a gray rectangle with the walls drawn on it in a slightly different gray. Every floor looked like the same box with different lines inside it, and after a few floors they all blurred together.

Now the map draws only the parts of the floor you’ve walked, and the stairs down appear once you’ve found them. The area you’ve explored gets a pale chalk edge, and that edge shows you where the walls are.

A dark dungeon corridor built from brown blocks in Alderen, with health bars, an action bar and a small map in the corner.
An early build of Alderen. The map in the top corner has only drawn the little bit of floor that’s been walked so far.

Our favorite part is that each floor now has a shape of its own. After a few minutes on a floor you start to know it by its outline, and a cramped mine comes out looking nothing like a wide cavern.

The parts you haven’t explored stay dark on the map, the same way the dungeon stays dark past the reach of your torch. Floors come from a seed, so you’ll uncover a new set of shapes on every run.
